Scientific Research
In recent years, Xiamen University has insisted on aiming for the cutting-edge of international scientific research and those areas of high demand to the country.It takes advantage of its strong potentiality in foundational research and actively develops applied foundational research and applied research. Its ability to do research in cutting-edge scientific fields and to take on significant research projects has improved to a great extent. It also contributes greatly to economic construction and social development on both a local and national scope. Prominent achievements have also been made in scientific research, result transfer, and industrialization.
In the past five years, Xiamen University has carried out 742 research projects, applied for 228 patents, and received 91 patents. In 2006, 2 scientific research findings won the Second Class Prize of National Natural Science Award. In 2004 and 2006, four articles were published in the prestigious journal Science and Nature. 46 research prizes at both provincial and state levels were issued, including Second Class Prize of National Natural Science Award and a Second Prize in the State Scientific and Technology Progress Prize.

The university continues to evidence its renowned strength in humanities and social sciences; 99 projects at the state-level social sciences foundation program have been implemented, with 22 projects in 2003 and 28 in 2004, ranking Xiamen University as No. 3 among all institutes of high education in the nation.
