Teaching and Research Environment
Xiamen University has a fine campus and excellent teaching and research environment. It is one of the best universities in the construction of such public service systems as teaching and research facilities, an electronic library, and a campus network. | Result Transfer
Prominent achievements have been made in independent scientific research innovation and transfer of scientific research results, such as the first speedy diagnosis reagent box for a vaccine against hepatitis C Type 5 and the bird flu virus H5N1, and the industrialization of the scientific research result N-(2)-L-alanyl-L-glutamine. In 2005, the Science Park of Xiamen University was recognized as a state university science park by the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Ministry of Education.
Disciplines
Further improvement of the disciplinary structures of Xiamen University has been made and the priority orientation of Xiamen University has been made clear. The traditional and strong disciplines of Xiamen University such as chemistry, economics, etc. have been consolidated, the international new disciplines and the national targets have been aimed at, the traditional disciplines have been renovated and reformed, the competitive power of the basic disciplines has been enhanced; those disciplines which have good prospects in the 21st century such as life science, computer and information sciences, material science, ocean science, environment science, management science, law, etc. have been greatly developed. The construction and development of those applied sciences such as engineering, etc. have been concentrated on; the pressing needs of Southeast China have been actively met, the construction of the badly needed disciplines of the economic development of Fujian and Xiamen, and other social developments has been emphasized; the interdisciplinary interaction has been accelerated and a group of the growing points of the new disciplines have been formed through the reform and renovation of mechanism and system.
International Cooperation and Exchange
Xiamen University has from day one maintained a global perspective on education and has promoted international and regional academic exchanges and cooperation in numerous fields. Xiamen University has inter-university cooperative ties with over 100 institutions of higher education at home and abroad. Xiamen University has formally established multi-lateral cooperative relationship with six other universities around the world by signing the Agreement on Global U7 Consortium in April, 2004. (Meiji University of Japan became the 8th member of the consortium in 2005.)
In recent years, the university has sent scholars or teachers abroad on hundreds of occasions for cooperative research, further study, and to attend academic conferences each year, and has also sent out exchange students to sister universities around the world. Since 2000, it has welcomed over 2000 foreign teachers and experts for teaching, delivering lectures, or conducting research, has successfully hosted over 50 international and regional academic conferences, and has carried out over 60 international joint research programs.
Xiamen University is located on the west bank of the Taiwan Strait, and is in the forefront of cultural exchanges with Taiwan because of its especially favorable geographical location and advantageous human resources. It is one of the Mainland Chinese universities most actively engaged in cross-straits educational, scientific and cultural exchanges
